Wayne County Jail

The Wayne County detention was founded in 1994 at 207 E Chestnut Street, Goldsboro, NC 27530. The facility comprises seven floors and is designed to accommodate approximately 200 inmates, whereby the number includes 178 male beds and 22 female beds. On the first floor is the sheriff’s office, while the remaining five floors consist of cellblocks. In addition, the booking area takes the bottom floor of the jail while each floor contains 38 beds. However, the 5th floor consists of 48 beds. Currently, the facility’s capacity is about 340 inmates.

The Wayne Detention center supervises the roadside clean-up crews, which consist of inmates who are either doing community service, volunteer work for the county, or court-ordered. The facility provides different opportunities to inmates, including GED, anger management, financial management, and computer education. In addition, the facility offers inmates with substance abuse treatment.

Neuse Correctional Institution

The Neuse Correctional Institution is a minimum and medium security facility located at 701 Stevens Mill Road, Goldsboro, NC. The facility has a capacity of approximately 788 beds. The Neuse Correctional Institution houses adult male convicted of misdemeanors in the state and process adult felons incarcerated for less than 24 months. The facility offers inmates different programs, including; Incentive wages positions, service clubs, substance abuse programs, Narcotics Anonymous, a Transition program, home care aid, computer education, prison fellowship, formal worship, and Bible studies.

The Wayne County sheriff’s office consists of the following divisions;

Civil Division

The Wayne County sheriff’s office civil division comprises two different parts, which include the civil processes and the court security.

  • Civil process section- the civil process section consists of six full-time deputies and eight part-time deputies. The primary duties of the department include; evictions, conducting pre and post-judgment remedies, and serving civil documents in the county.
  • Court section- the court section has ten full-time Bailiffs and 12 part-time deputy Bailiffs. Some of the section’s responsibilities include the protection of court officials, witnesses, and jurors, handling prisoners, and carrying out court orders.

Enforcement Division

The enforcement division comprises of investigation division, patrol division, warrant squad, aviation unit, support services, DWI Task Force, drug enforcement, and K-9 division. The division is headed by Major Chris Worth, while each section has supervisors who manage the everyday activities.

Support Services Division

The primary function of the support services division is to manage the daily administrative activities of the sheriff’s office and detention center. Other duties of the division include; keeping the equipment inventory records, purchasing equipment, and providing help where needed.

Wayne County is located in the coastal plain parts of North Carolina. The county was founded in 1779 from Dobbs County and named after Mad Anthony Wayne, a Revolutionary War General. According to data taken from the 2020 Census, the county has a total population of 11733 people. Goldsboro is its largest city and county seat, while the adjacent counties include Wilson County, Greene County, Lenoir County, Duplin County, Sampson County, and Johnston County.
