About Watauga County Detention Center

Watauga County Detention Center is a minimum-security Adult facility located at 184 Hodges Gap Road, Boone, NC, 28607. The facility has been operational since 1983 and receives about 4939 bookings annually and about 213 bookings monthly. The facility accommodates inmates from all over the county under the management of the North Carolina Sheriff and the North Carolina Department of Corrections. Watauga County detention facility has a capacity of 64 staff members who ensure inmates receive medical care and food services and provide a secure environment.

Annually, the facility uses approximately 53 inmates in its office work lines to assist administrations with its clothing, kitchen, fields, and other tasks. In addition, inmates in the facility receive various programs which enable them to gain new skills to help them after completing their sentence.

Watauga County Sheriff’s Office is a law enforcement agency dedicated to providing primary law enforcement services to the public to protect their lives, welfare, and property. In addition, the office is responsible for handgun purchase permits, concealed carry permissions, and employment fingerprinting. The Watauga County sheriff’s office is operational daily from Monday to Friday except on Holidays. The sheriff’s office consists of the following divisions;

Civil Division

The civil division is in charge of all the process services in Watauga County. The processes include; tax warrants, attachments, civil orders for arrests, civil summons, juvenile summons, writs for possession, execution, claim and deliveries, and child custody orders. It is important to note that all papers must be received within 15 working days before the court date. In addition, all documents must be signed, dated, and have a file number included.

Criminal Investigation Division

The criminal investigation division consists of different specialized units. Although the detectives investigate various offenses, each specialized team concentrates on a particular type of offense, acquiring experience and knowledge, making their work more effective for the citizens of Watauga County. The division investigates cases ranging from robbery, property, and identity theft to murder.

Patrol Division

The patrol division is the central pillar of the Watauga County sheriff’s office. The division is responsible for enforcing traffic laws, serving various civil and criminal documents, securing residences and businesses within the county, and school security checks.

Training Division

The training division is in charge of offering the required training to keep all law enforcement certifications and enhance the officer survival skills of the department. Watauga County was founded in 1849 from parts of Ashe County, Wilkes County, Caldwell County, and Yancey County. The county is named after the Watauga River. Boone is the largest city and the county seat, while the adjacent counties include Johnson County, Avery County, Caldwell County, Wilkes County, and Ashe County.

According to the 2020 Census, the county has a total population of about 54086 and occupies a total area of 312.56 square miles.
