Most offenders at this facility are awaiting trial, bond, or serving short sentences, usually less than two years.

The correctional facility is the most extensive prison office in Robeson County, arranged on six sections of land in metropolitan Lumberton. It began its operations in 1992 and boasts nearly 4811 inmate bookings annually. The monthly average of total bookings in this county jail is 296. The jail can house up to 412 offenders at a given time. The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office manages and operates the Robeson County Jail. Additionally, more than 70 staff members are responsible for the daily operations of the jail, alongside providing the safety and security of the offenders.

Lumberton Correctional Institution

The Lumberton Correctional Institution is a medium security state prison located at 75 Legend Road, Lumberton, NC 28359. The correctional facility began operating in November 1994 with only 312 beds. Three additional dormitories that were under construction later opened in 1995. Offenders can be assigned to this prison since they are promoted from higher security prisons, demoted from lower security ones, or assigned after processing.

This correctional institution features a campus-style design comprising seven buildings. It has six dormitories, an administration building, a vocational building, a 20-cell segregation unit, and a gatehouse. Inmates can work on Department of Transportation road squads or perform maintenance and kitchen duties.
