The correctional system in Lee County consists of two facilities, the Lee County jail and the Sanford correctional center. The former is a county facility, while the latter is a state facility.
Lee County Jail
Lee County jail, located at 1401 Elm Street, Sanford, NC 27331, is a minimum-security facility that houses both male and female inmates. The facility houses inmates waiting for trials and those serving short sentences. Inmates convicted of serious crimes like murder are transferred to state facilities. The Lee County sheriff’s office is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the jail with the assistance of about 136 correctional officers and agents. The jail offers inmates educational programs, religious services, and vocational training. Inmates also get visitation privileges from Monday to Sunday from 7 AM to 9 PM. Visitors must schedule a visit before the desired visit by calling the facility at 919-718-4567. Inmates and visitors must also follow the visitation guidelines or risk losing the visitation privilege. Friends and family can also contact inmates through mail or phone.
Sanford Correctional Center
Sanford Correctional Center is a minimum security facility that houses male inmates. The facility, located at 417 Advancement Center Road, Sanford, NC 27330, is under the management of the North Carolina Department of Public Safety. The prison has an inmate capacity of 298. In the 1930s, the facility housed inmates who were used for building roads, and years later, the facility was converted into an officer training center. Later in the 1970s, the facility was repurposed into a state prison facility. Inmates in prison have off-site jobs with the department of transport squads, correctional enterprise sign recycling plant, the Office of Staff Development and Training, and the local government. Other inmates work within the prison as janitors, groundkeepers, or in the kitchen. The prison also offers rehabilitation programs such as alcoholics anonymous, narcotics anonymous, Yokefellow Bible study, religious services, vocational training, and educational programs.

Lee County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for protecting people and property in the county’s unincorporated areas. The head of the office is the sheriff, elected for a four-year term. The sheriff is also in charge of administrative and clerical duties, including filling out paperwork on warrants and complaints, reviewing patrol logs, supervising deputies’ hiring and training, managing the county jail, and writing and distributing the budget.
