About Yancey County Detention Center

The Yancey County Detention Center is a medium-security facility arranged on seven parts of land in the Burnsville metropolitan area. The facility was established in 1954 at 6 Burnsville, NC, 28714. The 45-bed Office accommodates pre-preliminary inmates. Notwithstanding its capacities, the Yancey County facility provides reintegration programming to male convicted criminals.

The facility receives monthly bookings of approximately 106 inmates and has about 104 staff members who provide food services, medical care, and a secure environment to the inmates. In addition, the facility utilizes about 22 prisoners per year who help the administration with its clothing and kitchen, among other operations.

Criminal Investigation Division

The criminal investigation division is responsible for investigating all major crimes in Yancey County. The division consists of a Lieutenant who manages two other full-time investigator officers and one part-time investigator in the unit. One detective officer is assigned to investigate crimes regarding the sale, use, and possession of narcotics within Yancey County. Some of the other crime investigated by the division includes white color offenses, felonious assaults, offenses involving juvenile suspects, sexual assaults, property crimes, and violations against children and the elderly.

Patrol Division

The patrol division is the most visible unit of the Yancey County sheriff’s Office, offering 24/7 services to the citizens, businesses, and visitors within Yancey County. The primary duty of the division includes responding to calls for service, preliminary criminal investigations, enforcement of all criminal laws, and the service of criminal and civil processes.

Communication Division

The communication division is in charge of answering emergency calls 24/7. The division must keep a composed demeanor during stressful incidents and possess the ability and confidence to show quick decision-making skills.

K-9 Division

The Yancey County sheriff’s Office consists of four specially trained K-9 teams, and every unit comprises one human partner and one K-9. Yancey County is situated in the Mountain parts of North Carolina and partially borders the state of Tennessee. The county was founded in 1833 from Burke County and Buncombe County and named after Bartlett Yancey, a U.S congressman from 1813 to 1817. According to the 2020 Census, the county has a total population of approximately 18470 people. Burnsville is the largest city and the county seat, while the adjacent counties include Mitchell County, McDowell County, Buncombe County, Madison County, and Unicoi County.
