About Union County Jail and Others 

There is one jail in Union County, the Union County Jail, that acts as the primary detention facility in the county. The jail is the hub for all inmates arrested within the borders of Union County. 

After inmates are arrested by various law enforcement agencies such as the deputy sheriffs, local police departments, the UN Marshals, ICE, and FBI agencies, they are booked at various stations. After booking, they are presented in front of a judge who verifies the situation and issues or denies bail. Those who can afford to pay the bail are released. However, those who can or are denied are transferred to this jail. 

The Union County Jail is located at 3344 Presson Road in Monroe, North Carolina, 28112. It is operated primarily by the Union County Sheriff’s Office with supervision from the North Carolina Department of Public Safety at the regional level. Lieutenant Colonel Lori Pierce is in charge of the inmates’ welfare in the jail. 

The jail also houses adult male and female offenders with sentences not exceeding twenty-four months and with a possibility of release on parole after some time. The NCDPS also has a housing unit that houses probation and parole offenders, a witness protection unit, and community re-entry inmates. 

Inside the Prison 

Inmates in this prison sleep on single bunks’ beds and the walls between the male and female housing units are separated. Upon arrival, all inmates receive a housing unit, bedding, toiletries, and prison uniform. Classification is done depending on the data collected from the screening and orientation program. 

During this prison, the jail administration conducts medical and mental health examinations, fingerprint submissions, and background checks on new detainees. The inmates also have access to commissary goods and services such as foodstuff, toiletries, stationery, haircuts, photocopying, and clothes.
