McDowell County Jail 

McDowell County jail at 593 Spaulding Road, Marion, NC, 28752, was established in 1932 to house adult inmates. The jail is arranged on two sections of land and can accommodate 133 inmates. The facility’s inmates are considered low-risk and mostly serve brief terms of two years or less or awaiting trial. Inmates with higher security needs are transferred to state facilities. Inmates in the facility can access programs such as substance abuse treatment and religious services. 

Marion Correctional Institution 

Marion Correctional Institution, located at 355 Old Glenwood Road, Marion, NC 28752, houses adult male offenders and is under the unit management concept. The Construction of the facility began after voters approved a $200 million prison construction bond in 1990. In 1991, 125 acres of land were purchased and dedicated to constructing the state prison. Construction of the facility ended in 1995, and inmate housing assignments began in the same year. Marion was initially intended to be a 660-bed medium-security adult male prison but was reconfigured as a close and medium-security jail with 930 inmates due to the state’s need for extra high-security prison cells. 

Marion Correctional Institution provides various programs to help better the lives of inmates. The McDowell Technical Community College offers inmates educational and vocational training programs. The courses include computer training, adult basic education, GED, and horticulture. Other programs offered in the facility include

The sheriff is in charge of the office and is assisted by the chief deputy and division captains.
