County Inmate Search

According to the Freedom of Information Act, inmate data falls under public records. As a result, the information must be easily accessible to the general public. Most states and counties, including Gaston, comply with this requirement by establishing online inmate rosters.

Gaston County Offender Search Process

The Sheriff’s Office is the primary authority responsible for maintaining Gaston County inmate records. Usually, every arrest within the county must be reported to the office, after which it records the data for easy retrieval.

Like most counties, Gaston maintains an online inmate roster, allowing you to access offender and arrestee data from your home. The website contains information on offenders in the County’s Main Jail and the Annex Facility.

There are two broad search options: Name and Booking Number. The former option allows you to input your loved one’s first and last name in conjunction or separately. However, using both names together narrows down the results to a particular individual, easing the search process. The Booking Number option is the best search option, as each number identifies a particular offender.

The search results indicate the following:

  • Offender Name
  • Race
  • Sex
  • Height and Weight

If the online search is unsuccessful, you can visit the Sheriff’s Office at 425 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Gastonia, NC 28052. Ensure you know your loved one’s full name for easy information retrieval.

Inmate Search via the Department of Public Safety

Sometimes, inmates from county facilities may end up in state custody for various reasons, including:

  • Change in Security Level
  • Court Determination

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety manages state-run correctional facilities. To conduct an offender search, visit the NCDPS offender search website and utilize one of the following search options:

The Inmate Locator option gives you the following search options:

  • Name
  • Offender Search
  • Race
  • Birth Date

Through the website, you can learn about the whereabouts of your loved ones, their release dates, reasons for arrest, and parole eligibility.

The Sex Offender Registry

If you want to learn about sex offenders, the North Carolina Sex Offender and Public Protection Registry is the place to look. The database contains information on all registered sex offenders in the state, including those in the community. Maintaining such a website is key as it helps county residents to remain safe from offenders likely to recidivate.

About the County Jail and Other Prisons/Jails in the County

Gaston County is home to two correctional facilities: the Gaston County Jail (main facility) and the Gaston County Jail (Annex).

Gaston County Jail (Main)

The main facility has been in existence since 1999 and sits on a 160,000 square feet space. Currently, the jail has an inmate capacity of 440 and primarily focuses on housing state pretrial prisoners.

However, you’ll also find local inmates in this facility under the Sheriff’s Office supervision. Other times, the jail contracts with the United States Marshals to keep federal detainees awaiting trial at a daily charge of $73.00.

Additionally, inmates at the main facility and the satellite facility have access to a 24-hour-a-day medical unit staffed by licensed medical professionals. There’s also a kitchen under the management of an outside contractor who runs the jail’s kitchen. Trained dietitians prepare meals that must fall within the state-mandated calorie range of 2100-2500.

The Gaston County (Annex)

The Gaston County Jail (Annex) is the oldest correctional facility in the county. It sits on 24,740 square feet and has an inmate capacity of 176, but the operating limit is 159.

Primarily, the jail houses pretrial male and female detainees, as well as those serving time after sentencing by the Gaston County Courthouse. Additionally, Gaston County Jail (Annex) functions as a work release facility, which houses offenders prisoners awaiting community reentry from the Federal Bureau of Prison‘s custody. The Bureau of Prisons pays the jail a daily fee of $80.

The jail’s staff members are responsible for checking and approving each inmate’s employment status. They also keep track of the inmates working in the community by escorting and observing them when necessary.
