Beaufort County Jail maintains an online roster where you can search for an inmate. The roster is grouped in a way that you can find inmates based on their:

  • Names
  • Date of incarceration
  • Date of arrest
  • Charges
  • Age
  • Race

Although you only need to know the offender’s name, additional information such as tattoos, aliases, and date of birth can help you narrow down the search results.

If you have no luck finding the inmate using the inmate roster, you can contact the facility’s personnel at 252-946-7113 and request them to search on your behalf. This is because sometimes an inmate may be in the facility but not on the jail roster due to various reasons like;

  • They have recently arrived at the facility
  • Not yet completed their booking or orientation process
  • Records sealed by the court, especially for custody protection purposes
  • Awaiting transfer to another jail or prison

You can also find an inmate using the NCDPS offender search to see if the inmate is in the state prisons. You can try finding them by name or prisoner ID.

Since the inmate may have been charged with federal offenses, they may be in one of the federal prisons in the state. You may use the BOP Inmate locator to find them by name, INS, DCDC, FBI, or BOP register number.

Alternatives to finding inmates in Beaufort County

If you cannot find inmates using the above mention ways, you can utilize third-party websites. These websites offer access to the state’s public records. And according to the NC Freedom of Information, you can access these records. Third-party websites provide a quick search option for inmate records by name, county, and prisoner ID when possible.

Finally, suppose you are a crime victim. In that case, you can register with the NC free resource VINELink to receive notifications when your offender is being transferred or released from jail or how they behave in prison. You can receive notifications by phone, text messages, or email.

Beaufort County Jail and other jails/prisons

With a capacity of 85 beds, the Beaufort County Detention Center, constructed in 1969, is the county’s only jail. The county jail is located in Washington, NC 27889, at 112 W. 2nd St. The North Carolina General Statutes, section 162-22, provides the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office with the responsibility to run and maintain the county jail.

Captain Jeremy Hewitt oversees the prison’s operations while handling the correctional staff and the inmates in the jail. However, on a regional basis, the NC Department of Public Safety supervises all the actions of the jail. This includes staffing, training, funding, and decision-making.

The jail houses pre-trial inmates whose court denies bail or cannot pay the bail, thus incarcerated as county guests. Furthermore, they are criminals when the court decides so. After that, inmates can be transferred to the state or federal facilities in the county.

The jail also incarcerates inmates the court finds guilty of common misdemeanor charges that serve sentences of less than a year. However, the inmates in the county jail are deemed non–violent, thus classifying the jail as a minimum-medium security facility. On average, inmates spend the time in jail for around three months and even qualify for parole.

Inmates in the Beaufort County jail can work as trustees in the various departments in the jail. An inmate can acquire trustee status through good behavior and work at the detention center for a fee, reduced days, or a good word-in to the Beaufort County Probations and Parole offices.

Jail Staff

In addition to correctional officers who operate under the chief jailor, the sheriff hires more non-officer workers. These are the cooks, librarians, maintenance, and other secretarial jobs. These employees may be volunteers and must be verified by the county sheriff. These community volunteers work as chaplains, lecturers, and babysitters in the jail’s lobby.

The sheriff also recruits inmates with various skills and who are disciplined to work as trustees in the various departments in the jail.

Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office

The Sheriff’s Office is responsible for maintaining order and ensuring the safety of residents and their property. The sheriff acts as the chief law enforcement officer in the county. Their primary duties are:

  • Conducting investigations and apprehending offenders.
  • Providing courthouse and courtroom security
  • Serving criminal and civil warrants
  • Enforcing the law within the county

Law enforcement

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is in charge of ensuring the residents follow the laws of the county. The office can conduct patrols within the county, investigate crime and arrest suspects.
