The search website allows searchers to find inmates using the inmates’ names or offender numbers. Finding inmates is crucial, especially when you want to visit or send inmate packages, money, or letters.

The Bureau of Prisons Inmate locator also has an online search engine that you can use to find inmates all over the state of North Carolina. Your inmate may be charged with a federal offense, and since there are no federal facilities in the county, you may need to utilize the BOP inmate locator tool to find them.

Ensure you know the name and inmate ID of the person you are searching for.

Avery County Jail and Other Jails/Prisons

Avery County Jail is a correctional facility located at 300 Shultz Circle, PO Box 426, Newland, NC, 28657. It has a 694-bed capacity and houses about 663 inmates under the supervision of over 180 staff members. Even though the county sheriff’s office operates the Avery County Jail, it is contracted to house federal inmates, Immigration and Customs Enforcement inmates, and state prisoners.

The Institution holds an average of about 457 inmates daily, the majority male. Most of these inmates are those awaiting trial in the courts in the county. These inmates are in jail because they couldn’t afford to pay or were denied bail by the court.

However, it’s a 19-bed capacity for inmates serving time in the jail, which, ideally, on average, is three months. Again, these inmates are non-violent, and most have low misdemeanor sentences that are less than a year with a possibility of release on parole.

The NCDPS also contracts with the jail to run a community re-entry program for state inmates who have had long sentences nearing release. It also houses the county parole and probation violators in this jail.

Other jails/Prisons

Avery County has two other jails/prisons in the county. The county is home to Avery-Mitchell Correctional Institution at 600 Amity Park Road, Spruce pine, NC. It was established in 1995 after the General Assembly authorized its construction. This led to the shutting down of the Watauga and Yancey Correctional facilities in 1999. This prison has a capacity of 816 male offenders.

The county is also home to the Mountain View Correctional Institution at 545 Amity Park Road. The facility was opened in December 1998 as a private correctional facility and was initially operated and owned by the Corrections Corporations of America. This facility also houses around 884 male offenders within the state.

These facilities are managed and run by the NC Department of Public Safety-Adults Corrections. They are for short-term sentences for inmates with around two or more years for violent crimes.
